What Does Chrome's Energy Saver Mode Do?

Open chrome://settings/performance and there are two toggles stacked on top of each other: Memory Saver and Energy Saver. It's easy to assume they're two names for the same feature. They're not — one frees RAM, the other saves battery, and they work by doing almost nothing alike.

What it actually throttles

Energy Saver reduces background power draw by limiting how much work Chrome lets tabs do that you're not actively watching: it slows background tab refresh rates, reduces the frame rate on some video and animation-heavy pages, and dials back visual effects like smooth scrolling. Every tab's process keeps running — nothing is discarded, nothing closes, nothing reloads. It's a smaller, steadier trade of visual polish for battery life, not a memory-reclaiming move.

This is the opposite trade-off from Memory Saver, which frees RAM by discarding an idle tab's process outright — at the cost of a reload when you click back to it. Energy Saver never reloads anything; it just asks every running tab to do less in the background.

When it turns on

By default, Chrome switches Energy Saver on automatically once two conditions line up: your laptop is unplugged, and its battery has dropped to roughly 20% or below. Unplug your laptop at 80% and nothing changes yet — Energy Saver waits for the battery to actually get low before it starts throttling anything.

From chrome://settings/performance, you can loosen that trigger to "Turn on always when unplugged," which drops the battery-percentage requirement entirely and activates Energy Saver the moment you disconnect the charger, or turn the feature off completely if you'd rather Chrome never touch background activity for you.

On a desktop machine with no battery, or a laptop that stays plugged in permanently, neither trigger ever fires — the setting exists but has nothing to activate on, so it just sits off.

How to tell it's active

A small leaf icon appears in the address bar when Energy Saver is running. Hovering it (or clicking it) confirms the mode is on and gives you a one-click way to turn it off for the current session if you need full performance back — for a video call or a demo, say — without changing the underlying setting.

Why it rarely feels like a downgrade

Chrome deliberately keeps the throttling light enough that most people never notice it beyond the icon. Foreground tabs — whatever you're actively looking at and interacting with — aren't the target; the savings come almost entirely from tabs sitting in the background doing work nobody's watching. If a page feels sluggish specifically while Energy Saver's icon is showing, that's more likely a heavier page (lots of embedded video or animation) meeting the throttle than a general slowdown.

Fewer background tabs, less for either setting to manage
