Why New Tabs Don't Always Open Next to the One You're On

Ctrl+click a link and the new tab slots in right beside you. Press Ctrl+T for a blank tab and it jumps to the far right end of the strip instead. Neither is random — Chrome has one consistent rule for where a new tab lands, based on how you opened it, not what's in it.
The rule: does the tab come from a link, or not?
Chrome treats a new tab differently depending on whether it has a page of origin:
- Opened from a link — Ctrl+click, Cmd+click, middle-click, or right-click → "Open link in new tab" — lands immediately to the right of the tab you opened it from. Chrome considers it related to that page, so it keeps the two next to each other.
- Opened with no page of origin — pressing Ctrl+T (Cmd+T), clicking the + button, or typing a URL into a fresh tab — lands at the very end of the tab strip, after every other open tab, regardless of which tab you were looking at.
Same browser, same session — the placement depends entirely on which of those two actions triggered it.
Why a batch of links opens in reverse order
Open three links one after another from the same page without switching away, and the newest tab always claims the spot immediately next to the original — pushing the previous new tabs one slot further right each time. The net effect: the last link you clicked ends up closest to where you started, and the first one you clicked is now furthest away. It looks scrambled if you're expecting top-to-bottom order, but it's the same "insert right after origin" rule applied three times in a row.
Following links deeper moves the anchor point
The "next to the tab you opened it from" rule uses whichever tab is currently active as the anchor — not the tab you started your whole browsing session on. Click into one of those newly opened tabs and open another link from there, and the newest tab lands next to that tab, not back next to your original one. A few hops of following links can leave a tab positioned far from where the trail began, even though every individual jump followed the same rule.
There's no setting for this
Chrome doesn't have an option in chrome://settings to force every new tab to open adjacent to the current one, or to always open at the end regardless of source — the split is built into how Chrome decides a tab's origin, not something exposed to you. If you want different placement behavior consistently, that requires a third-party extension; Chrome's native settings don't cover it.
Background vs. focused: a separate axis
Placement (where) and focus (whether you switch to it) are two different things. Ctrl+click and middle-click both open a tab in the background — next to the current tab, but without stealing your focus, so you can keep reading and check it later. A plain click on a target="_blank" link typically opens the new tab and switches to it immediately. If you're trying to open several links without losing your place, Ctrl+click (or middle-click) is the one that keeps you where you are.
When tab position stops being the real problem
Knowing the placement rule helps you predict where a tab lands, but it doesn't help once you've opened enough tabs from enough different starting points that "position in the strip" stops meaning anything useful — you're back to scanning truncated titles for the one you actually need. FAQ
Why do new tabs sometimes open right next to my current tab, and other times at the far end?
It depends on how the tab was opened. A tab opened from a link — Ctrl+click, Cmd+click, middle-click, or 'Open link in new tab' — opens immediately to the right of your current tab, because Chrome treats it as related to the page you were on. A tab opened independently of any page — pressing Ctrl+T, clicking the + button, or typing a new address — opens at the very end of the tab strip instead.
Is there a Chrome setting to change where new tabs open?
No. Chrome doesn't expose a setting in chrome://settings to change new-tab placement — the link-adjacent vs. end-of-strip split is fixed behavior, not configurable. A handful of third-party extensions can override tab placement if you want different behavior.
Does opening several links from the same page keep them in order?
Yes, but not in the order you might expect from a normal reading pass. Each new tab opens immediately to the right of the tab you opened it from — so if you Ctrl+click three links one after another from the same page without switching tabs, the last one you clicked ends up closest to the original tab, with the first one you clicked furthest away.
Why does a tab opened from search results end up far from where I expect?
If you're on a search results page and Ctrl+click several results, each opens next to the search tab, in reverse-click order. If you then click into one of those result tabs and open a link from there, that new tab opens next to the result tab — not back next to the original search tab — so a few levels of link-following can put a tab far from where you started.
Does a tab opened in the background (Ctrl+click) still get focus?
No — Ctrl+click (or Cmd+click) opens a tab in the background without switching to it, so you keep reading the current page while the new tab loads behind the scenes. Middle-click behaves the same way. Regular left-click on a link that specifies target="_blank" typically switches focus to the new tab immediately.
