Somewhere past 25 or 30 open tabs, the tab strip stops looking like tabs at all — just a row of favicons packed edge to edge, titles gone, and clicking the wrong sliver by a pixel opens the wrong page. That's tab overflow, and it has a specific cause and a specific set of fixes.

Why tabs shrink instead of scrolling

Chrome's tab strip has a fixed width — the space between the last pinned item and the new-tab button — and it divides that width evenly across every open tab in the window. There's no scroll, no wrap to a second row, and no minimum width it refuses to go below. Add a tab, and every existing tab gets a little narrower to make room. Keep adding, and eventually:

  1. The title text gets truncated, then disappears entirely.
  2. Only the favicon remains visible.
  3. Below roughly 30-40px per tab (varies by screen width and OS), even the favicon starts getting clipped, and the close (×) button overlaps the clickable area.

This is a rendering limit, not a technical one — Chrome can keep dozens more tabs open and running just fine underneath. The strip just runs out of pixels to represent them individually.

What actually fixes it

Close what you don't need. The only thing that reliably widens tabs back out is having fewer of them. There's no per-tab minimum-width override to bypass this.

Group related tabs. Right-click a tab → Add tab to new group, then repeat for others on the same task. A collapsed group shows as one small colored pill instead of N individual slivers, which reclaims exactly the space those tabs were taking. This is the closest thing Chrome has to "fixing" overflow without losing anything.

Use tab search instead of scanning by eye. The small dropdown at the top-right of the tab strip (or Ctrl+Shift+A / Cmd+Shift+A) opens a searchable list of every open tab by title — useful once titles are too narrow to read visually anyway.

Pin your anchor tabs. Pinned tabs shrink to icon-only by design, but they sit in a fixed-width strip separate from the rest, so they don't compete for space with your regular tabs and stay easy to find by position.

Open a second window. Splitting tabs across two Chrome windows (drag a tab out, or Ctrl+N / Cmd+N for a fresh one) halves how many tabs any single strip has to fit, at the cost of managing two windows instead of one.

None of these change the underlying limit — they just reduce how many tabs are competing for the same strip at once.

  • Why do my Chrome tabs get so small I can't read the titles?

    Chrome divides the tab strip's fixed width evenly across every open tab. There's no scrolling or wrapping — as you open more tabs, each one gets narrower, until only the favicon fits and the title is gone entirely. It's expected behavior, not a bug, but it makes the tab bar useless well before you hit any technical tab limit.

  • Is there a setting to make Chrome tabs a fixed minimum width?

    No. Chrome has no built-in setting to floor tab width or switch to a scrolling tab strip — that behavior is fixed.   • Does closing tabs fix the shrinking, or do I need an extension?
