Open enough tabs and the favicons stop being enough to tell them apart — but Chrome also overlays a second layer of small icons on individual tabs, and those aren't decoration. Each one is telling you something specific is happening in that tab right now.
The speaker icon: audio is playing
The most common one. A small speaker icon appears on any tab actively playing sound — video, music, a notification chime, anything.
- Solid speaker = audio is playing right now.
- Muted speaker (with a line through it) = that tab has been muted, either by you or automatically.

Camera and microphone icons: active hardware access
If a site is using your webcam or microphone right now — a video call, a voice recorder, a live-transcription tool — Chrome marks the tab with a small camera or microphone icon. This only appears while the hardware is actively in use, not just because a site was granted permission at some point in the past.
It's a genuinely useful safety signal: if you see a camera icon on a tab you don't remember starting a call in, that's worth investigating before you assume it's nothing.
The tab-capture icon: this tab is being shared
When a tab's content is being captured — during a screen share, a recording, or casting to a Chromecast/TV — Chrome distinguishes that specific tab with its own indicator, separate from every other icon on this list. It answers a different question: not "what is this tab doing" but "who else can currently see what's in this tab."
If you're on a video call and only meant to share one window but a different tab shows this marker, that's your signal something is being captured that you didn't intend.
What these icons don't tell you
None of these icons are a memory aid — they only reflect what's happening right now, in real time:
- They disappear the moment the activity stops. Close the call, and the camera/mic icon vanishes with it — there's no history of "this tab used your mic five minutes ago."
- They don't identify the tab beyond its favicon. A speaker icon tells you a tab is playing audio, but with several candidates open, you're still scanning the strip visually to find which one.
- They're not a substitute for search. If the tab you're looking for isn't currently doing anything active, none of these icons help — that's what Chrome's built-in tab search (
